The use of perfume has evolved over the centuries. The early Egyptians used perfumed balms as part of religious ceremonies and later in preparations for love making. It is said that Cleopatra, Queen of the Nile, succeeded in winning over Marc Antony by using fantastic perfumes.
Perfumes eventually fell out of favor as the influence of the Egyptian culture upon civilization declined. It wasn't until the 16th Century in France that perfume again became popular.
In 16th Century French society, the wearing of perfumed leather gloves by women of the upper-class sparked the beginning of the perfume industry becoming established in France and it has continued through today to be the center of the perfume world.

Walking up to the counter at a department store and seeing the different names; eau de toilette, aftershave, and cologne, can be confusing when you want to a fragrance.
An aftershave contains the lowest amount of perfume oil of the three, around 1%-3%. They often contain soothing and cooling ingredients such as Aloe Vera to help soothe the skin after a shave. With a 1%-3% perfume amount, you can expect the fragrance to last from 2-3 hours.
A cologne contains 2%-5% perfume oil and a Eau de toilette is approximately 5%-8% perfume oil. The greater the amount of perfume oil, the longer-lasting the scent. A cologne will remain fragrant for about 5 hours while a Eau de toilette will remain from 6-8 hours.

When shopping for a perfume, you will commonly see the description broken down into three parts; top notes, middle notes, and base notes.
Top notes describe the first phase of the scent as these are the most volatile, hence their appearance evaporates quickly from the skin.
Middle notes are therapeutic and balancing oils which are sometimes referred to as 'heart notes'. This part of the fragrance is not immediately evident as they are overpowered by the top notes. After the top notes have evaporated, the scent of the middle notes develop on your skin and are present for about two to four hours.
Base Notes are the longest lasting notes of a fragrance. They serve two purposes; first to provide a long-lasting scent and second is to slow the evaporation of the top notes and middle notes from your skin.
