It wasn't too many years ago that wearing sneakers or tennis shoes for daily use was restricted only to kids and teenagers.
Those shoes of long ago only featured a flat rubber sole with a cloth mesh covering; kids could tolerate these shoes but they was too uncomfortable for adults to wear everyday.
